t's a Wednesday morning and about 22 peo-
ple are neck deep in water at the Cowan Civic
Center pool. One man splashes his neighbor,
Iand later flips upside down, but ultimately the
group is focused on the task at hand: fitness.
Lebanon Family YMCA instructor Lanie Corbin
teaches an AquaFit —or water aerobics — course
from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays at the Civic Center.
"We work on cardio, we work on strength, we
work on toning," Corbin stated. "Really, we cover
the whole body but in a gentler way, because there's
a lot of things you do in the water that some people
couldn't do on land."
Corbin explained that when her students exer-
cise in deep water, there is no impact on their joints,
which allows them to achieve full range of motion,
and in the shallow water, there is very little impact.
While AquaFit places less stress on joints than
other forms of exercise, it's still a serious workout.
Corbin stated, "I think when (water aerobics) first
started, so many people thought it was just for older
people, but there are actually athletes that train in
the water in their off seasons because you have the
resistance of the water, so it can make them a better
athlete."
Students stretch at the end of an AquaFit Deep class at the
Lebanon Family YMCA.
