e Columbus County Courthouse was built circa 1915 and is a classical revival style two-story brick structure

featuring a pedimented tera style Doric-order protico. e historic building is on the National Register of His-
toric places and the architect was Joseph F. Leitner. e stately building sits in the center of a round-about inter-
secting old Highways 74-76 and 701. e four streets that meet at the round-about are Washington, Pinckney,
Je erson and Madison. is area, known as Courthouse Square, is the legal hub of the county. Within walking
distance are many attorney o ces as well as supporting government o ces, with the newest being the 2015
Columbus County Courthouse project, built to accommodate larger courtrooms. e new brick courthouse is
nestled between the Court Square area and Smith Street. Plans are pending to renovate the historic courthouse.
