Hurricane Floyd: September 1999



                In September 1999, The Sun News reported that Hurricane Floyd
                slammed into Horry County, dumping as much as 24 inches of rain
                and sent many Conway residents searching for higher ground.
                Conway neighborhoods were hit hard and many  were left completely
                under water.                                                                            2

                Floyd entered the Carolinas, as a Category 2 storm with winds reach-              CAT
                ing 105 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.






                                             Floyd prompted the largest evacuation of the East Coast at that time
                                             with more than 400,000 South Carolina
                                             residents overflowing state roads as they fled the water, wind and to-
                                             rential rain.
                                             The Horry County Assessors Office reported in 1999 that 80 business-
                                             es and homes suffered major damage and
                                             734 experiencing minor damage. The county estimated that more than
                                             1,000 homes and businesses were impacted
                                             in some way.
