Hurricane Floyd: September 1999
In September 1999, The Sun News reported that Hurricane Floyd
slammed into Horry County, dumping as much as 24 inches of rain
and sent many Conway residents searching for higher ground.
Conway neighborhoods were hit hard and many were left completely
under water. 2
Floyd entered the Carolinas, as a Category 2 storm with winds reach- CAT
ing 105 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
Floyd prompted the largest evacuation of the East Coast at that time
with more than 400,000 South Carolina
residents overflowing state roads as they fled the water, wind and to-
rential rain.
The Horry County Assessors Office reported in 1999 that 80 business-
es and homes suffered major damage and
734 experiencing minor damage. The county estimated that more than
1,000 homes and businesses were impacted
