“Children should be raised to be independent, not raised to be tied to their
parents,” Leone explained. “If you aren’t ever given a chance to fail, how are you
going to accept your first failure?”
Though they love and live all things Webb 24/7, when the school day is over,
the Broadheads find peace and relaxation in gardening, spending at least an hour
each evening outside tending to their hundreds of plants. It’s a hobby Leone has
had her entire life and one she passed on to Ray when they met.
“The first time I saw her garden in Columbia (South Carolina) it was just
amazing,” he said. “Leone has incredible vision.”
Leone’s grandfather was a master gardener and she grew a fond appreciation
for it as a young woman. She jokes when saying she learned early in life that she
didn’t have to expect flowers from anyone if she learned to grow her own.
Leone says the impression one’s yard leaves on neighbors and anyone passing
by is one that lasts. The Broadhead’s yard is indeed one that’s reflective of who
they are — colorful, neat, detailed, fun … larger than life.
As much as the Broadheads find relaxation in weeding and watering their
garden, they love hosting groups of kids, parents or friends over for dinner. It’s
just another way to connect and cultivate relationships.
No matter how big or small any given group they’re hosting may be, you can
bet there are always fresh flowers on the table.
“We had 25 people over for dinner last night,” she said, adding that flowers
make people feel special. “That’s what we aim to do here with the kids, too.
Anything we can do to make the kids feel special is what we try to do.” l Story
