methods, the wooden barn siding on the old
barns has weathered to nearly black. Some of
the old structures that once provided shelter to
many generations of livestock have succumbed
to the shifting earth and the pressure of gravity
and collapsed. Inside these barns the boards in
the stalls show the cribbing done by generations
of horses.
Despite their age these old friends deserve
to be remembered. When they were built it
was through the efforts of an entire community.
There was no such thing as hiring a contractor
to build a barn.
Inside these old barns, if you get a chance
to go inside one, you can almost feel the warm
breath of the animals that lived there and you
can smell the sweat of the generations of people
that labored there to survive. l Story and photos
