Preserving the Past
Daniel Trabue House
Adair County’s town seat of Columbia was
established “at the intersection of two buffalo
trails near Russell Creek” in 1802 with one of
the primary founders being pioneer Daniel Tra-
bue, who built a home overlooking the town
square in 1823. The home, listed on the Na-
tional Register of Historic Places, still stands
today and serves as a museum of Adair County
history.
Columbia is well known for the
stately, beautiful courthouse standing in
the center of the public square.
The courthouse is currently main-
tained by county government, and local
preservation efforts are underway to re-
store and repurpose the grand facility
that has been a cornerstone of the com-
munity for decades.
