Polley Mansion

(Historic Whitehall)

Whitehall, known as Polley Mansion, was built in 1848 by
Joseph and Mary Polley, original settlers under Stephen F.
Austin’s Colony, known as the Old Three Hundred. The name
Whitehall comes from the birthplace of Joseph Polley—White-
hall, New York.

The Polley home took over four years to complete and furnish.
During this time the family lived in a “stake house” to the rear
of the present-day house. The mansion is a two-story rect-
angle shape with eight rooms and two large center hallways.
A two-story veranda runs the length of the front house with
prominent white columns and railings. The walls are built of
