Highlighting small family-owned neighborhood restaurants and food trucks

ecky Chavarria had a dream. Growing up in Galves-
ton, she always knew someday she wanted to own a
restaurant. To that end, she attended Galveston Col-
lege and studied culinary arts. However sometimes
life has different ideas and dreams are abandoned or delayed. A
series of off-island jobs and responsibilities caused Becky’s
dream to be delayed until the year 2013 when the timing seemed
right and she and her sister Melanie decided to open a sandwich
shop in Galveston. Unfortunately, Melanie passed away before
that could happen. Devastated, but not defeated, Becky forged
ahead and was able to open her own restaurant in 2014. With no
prior restaurant experience it was a challenge, but generations of
family recipes and her prior culinary training proved to be the
necessary ingredients to launch this highly successful venture.

Today, Mel’s is a Galveston destination for locals looking for
homemade old fashioned comfort food. A true family affair,
Becky’s mother Mary does the baking, nephew Nicholas does
the cooking and long time family friend Belinda oversees the
     dining room.
Their extensive menu offers a wide range of salads, burgers,
sandwiches and hot entrees insuring something for everyone.
Daily specials including meatloaf, smothered pork chops, baked
chicken and others rotate on a daily basis. Everything is home-
made and delicious. A special kid’s menu helps the family budg-
et. Spotlessly clean, go early as the specials often sell out.

Located a half block north of Broadway on 38 street there is
