Whichever test you choose, the important thing is
not to procrastinate. “Any screening test is a good test
as long as it gets done,” Dr. Michaelson said.
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of can-
cer-related deaths in men and in women in the U.S. and
the second most common cause of cancer deaths when
men and women are combined, according to the ACS.
In 2019, it’s estimated that 101,420 new cases of colon
cancer will be diagnosed and 44,180 new cases of rectal
cancer. Colorectal cancer is expected to cause about
51,000 deaths this year.
What can cause an increased risk of colorectal
cancer? Being male, for one, according to Dr. Michaelson,
as well as having diabetes, smoking cigarettes, and being
overweight (a BMI over 30).
Colorectal cancer may not show any signs or symp-
toms. However, if symptoms do present themselves
they can include bleeding, pain, or a change in bowl habit,
which could mean an increase or decrease in bowel
movements, Dr. Michaelson explained.
Blood may show up in the stool or the stool might
just appear darker, but often the stool simply looks nor- WILD
mal. Sometimes, the first sign of colorectal cancer is a
blood test showing a low red blood cell count, according
to ACS’s website. This is because over time, the blood
loss can build up and lead to low red blood cell counts, FIELD
or anemia.
If you show signs of colon or rectal cancer, and/or
would like to schedule a colonoscopy, contact your local Salad
gastroenterologist. “But do something,” Dr. Justino said.
“Because this is preventable, and it kills people.”
