Agriculture
With 261 square miles of total land area,
LaRue County boasts some of the most
beautiful farmland in the state. Each year, our
producers harvest major crops including corn,
wheat, and soybeans, and raise a wide range
of livestock from beef and dairy cattle, to
horses, sheep and goats. From small family
farms to large income-producing operations,
discover a few of the reasons that make
LaRue County a great place to grow.
Agriculture in LaRue County is very diverse with crops
and livestock to field variety plots and demostrations
used in extension research across the state.

The LaRue County Extension Service partners with
University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University
to conduct educational programs through an off-campus
information network. Staff deliver educational programs
such as newsletters and newspaper columns about various
subjects in agriculture, family and consumer sciences,
and youth development. They work closely with several
Homemakers clubs, 4-H project clubs and Ag commodity
groups in the county.
Each year, the County Extension Council hosts a
Leadership and Awards banquet, spring Extension Expo
and a “Reality Store,” a real-life learning experience in
budgeting for LaRue County Middle School students.
During the growing season, the Extension staff work
with local producers to hold weekly farmers’ markets in
the county and special Ag Market Day events.
